Last night while I was watching football I heard a knock at my door.   As I came around the corner to see who it was, almost tripping over the cat, I saw one of the neighborhood kids waiting outside.  Opening the door, I saw four kids in total who had decided there was something important enough to knock on my door at 6:30 in the evening on a school night.

“Yes?” I asked, “what’s up, guys?”

“Do you want to play hide and seek with us?”

(In my mind) “OH HELL YES OF COURSE I DO!

(Out loud) “Oh, hmmm well … I .. I guess yeah.  Lemme get my coat, I’ll be out in a minute.”

At this point all four of them went into convulsions because they were so excited.  Shouts of joy were heard as I opened the entry-way closet and put on something warm.  I yelled upstairs to Kigs, so that she could join if she wanted, then grabbed a flashlight and headed outside.

The shock and excitement of the situation made me completely unprepared for “1-2-3 ‘not it’”, so I lost the first round.  That was O.K. though, because Kigs hadn’t come out and we got to go again.  Kigs was “it” first.  We set the ground rules (stay inside the round part of the cul-de-sac, stay in front yards), Kigs was told to count to 30, and … we were OFF.

The game only lasted about 30 minutes before someone’s parents called them home.  I went back to watching my game, and upon reflection decided last night was an awesome night.

As the game was ending, and I was getting my flashlight back and the kids were getting their bikes and scooters from my driveway, we said our goodbyes.  The kids also were heard to be plotting the next game, as they were running home.

  1. I had a total flashback moment that night! I just happened to be playing (old school) Tetris and eating an apple and drinking some milk when the kids came by. Hee-hee.
