I learned a little bit about myself last night.  I learned that I do pretty well under emergency situations.

Halfway between Ellensburg and Yakima last night while coming home, I almost hit a baby deer.  It and its mother were standing in my lane.  There was a car in the left lane, and I couldn’t change lanes.  I wouldn’t have wanted to change lanes really either, cause they were headed in that direction.  I quickly slammed on my brakes (the A.B.S. system in my car works just fine I discovered) and after I’d slowed down enough that turning the wheel wouldn’t result in a wipeout, I eased the car over to the shoulder of the road.  Both deer were frozen, and I missed the baby by about six inches.  Time went really slowly, and I thought I was going to certainly hit them.  I’m glad I didn’t, for all our sakes.

Needless to say I didn’t really need any coffee to keep me awake the rest of the trip home.
